William J. Herbert ARMY William Herbert was the son of William and Mary Herbert and was living at Middle Island when he enlisted at Bridgeport, Connecticut on October 27, 1917. He served as a private in Company D of the 8th Machine Gun Battalion. He served overseas and was involved in the following campaigns; Champagne - Marne, Aisne - Marne, St. Mihiel, Meusse- Argonne Forest. During the Battle of the Argonne Forest he was severely wounded when he received a wound from a six inch high explosive shell. He returned from his wound on January 19, 1919. Herbert was discharged Feb. 14, 1919. He re-enlisted at Antwerp Belgium November 13, 1920. William Herbert married Laura A. Hutchinson 1921 The following newspaper article appeared in the
