William Herbert was the son of William and Mary Herbert and was living at Middle Island when he enlisted at Bridgeport, Connecticut on October 27, 1917. He served as a private in Company D of the 8th Machine Gun Battalion. He served overseas and was involved in the following campaigns; Champagne - Marne, Aisne - Marne, St. Mihiel, Meusse- Argonne Forest. During the Battle of the Argonne Forest he was severely wounded when he received a wound from  a six inch high explosive shell. He returned from his wound on January 19, 1919. Herbert was discharged Feb. 14, 1919. He re-enlisted at Antwerp Belgium November 13, 1920.
